The Old Town Square

The Old City and, in particular its square, has been the center of public life in Prague since the Middle Ages.

During the 11th century, the buildings extended from the Castle to the right bank of the Vltava River. At the end of this century the existence of a market in the present Old Town Square is mentioned for the first time.

Over the next two centuries Prague continued to grow and in the thirteenth century acquired the title of city. The town hall began to function in the middle of the fourteenth century.

What to see in the square?

The Old Town Square is one of the most pleasant places in Prague. Cozy and old, the square is surrounded by interesting alleys which make it a real pleasure to walk. The square is full of interesting buildings, such as the Church of Our Lady of Týn, the Church of San Nicolás and the Town Hall of the Old Town.

Church of Our Lady of Týn

Built in the 14th century on a former Romanesque church, the Church of Our Lady of Týn (Kostel Matky Boží před Týnem) is an impressive late Gothic church with two of the towering towers that dominate the skies of Prague.

Fused between the houses and narrow alleys of the city center, Týn Church is the largest symbol of Prague's Gothic style and a building with an important history. The church is 52 meters long and 28 meters wide, although its most important part is the impressive towers that exceed 80 meters in height.

City Hall of the Old City

The City Hall of Old Town is one of the buildings of the Old Town Square which attracts more attention thanks to which it is the impressive Prague Astronomical Clock.

The building, used as a town hall until the end of the 18th century, stands out for its Gothic tower of 60 meters high from which you can see the center of the city as a bird.
